Description

Shirley Budd of Anaconda, Montana, describes the Irish heritage of her mother and father's families. She discusses her relationship with her maternal grandparents, both Irish immigrants from County Galway [Contae Gaillimh], as well as some of the Irish traditions that they observed when she was growing up. She talks about her grandparents' reluctance to discuss Ireland or speak Gaelic in front of her and her cousins. Budd describes growing up in Anaconda, including the neighborhood grocery stores, the holidays the community celebrated such as Smelterman's Day, and the dances that were held at the community hall. She recalls spending the night with her aunts in her grandparent's home and reminisces about a ghost that inhabited the upstairs bedrooms. She also recalls learning the Irish jig by watching her grandfather perform it in the family home. Budd talks about attending wakes held in homes, including her grandmother and grandfather's. She concludes the interview by describing the family calendar that she maintains with births, deaths, new homes, anniversaries, important doctor's visits and other significant dates.

The interviewee's full birth date has been redacted from in the audio and transcript.
