Description
In this interview, Gary Whited reflects on his relationship with Henry Bugbee as his student and later as a mentee and friend of Bugbee. Whited discusses Bugbee’s classes, including poetry, Eastern philosophy and religion, and ancient Greeks; he also highlights Bugbee’s difficult relationship with other faculty in the Philosophy Department. A major part of the interview includes discussion of Bugbee’s relationship with French philosopher Gabriel Marcel, and how Bugbee’s and Marcel’s writings evolved. Whited subsequently talks about his own visit with Marcel in France after completing his undergraduate degree. Other topics consist of Bugbee’s love of fly-fishing; Bugbee’s writings, including The Inward Morning; Whited’s dissertation on Parmenides; and finally, Whited’s eventual career as a psychotherapist.
