WEBVTT 1 00:00:09.960 --> 00:00:17.430 Clare Maguire: Hello, welcome to my presentation on using Santray method 2 00:00:17.450 --> 00:00:32.560 Clare Maguire: in a clinical counseling setting. This can be used both in the clinical realm and also in school counseling. I'd like to focus somewhat today on the benefits of using Santray experiential. 3 00:00:32.630 --> 00:00:36.340 Clare Maguire: a tool. When working with students in a school setting. 4 00:00:37.070 --> 00:00:47.050 Clare Maguire: I am a Phd. Student in the department of counseling at the University of Montana. and I chose to create this poster presentation 5 00:00:47.230 --> 00:00:53.940 Clare Maguire: to bring awareness to a growing body of research that shows that 6 00:00:54.360 --> 00:01:02.840 Clare Maguire: people and students can benefit from this creative approach to counseling. So 7 00:01:03.850 --> 00:01:07.290 Clare Maguire: on the screen you'll see my poster presentation. 8 00:01:07.500 --> 00:01:17.900 Clare Maguire: And just to give a little bit of background. Santry therapy has roots in both onion and humanistic orientations 9 00:01:18.040 --> 00:01:19.560 of counseling. 10 00:01:19.810 --> 00:01:31.330 Clare Maguire: and it's been identified as a dynamic form of expressive psychotherapy. So when we think about psychotherapy, we think about working in an office setting with the counselor 11 00:01:31.570 --> 00:01:35.320 Clare Maguire: be using Sandra is a tool. 12 00:01:35.840 --> 00:01:40.960 Clare Maguire: This can also be applied in schools in the same setting. 13 00:01:44.870 --> 00:01:47.620 Clare Maguire: So with Santray 14 00:01:47.900 --> 00:01:56.110 Clare Maguire: there are a few things to think about before you get to the really fun part of setting up the santry. 15 00:01:56.230 --> 00:01:58.560 preparing the space. 16 00:01:58.650 --> 00:02:23.910 Clare Maguire: working with the client or student, and then interpreting the Santray after the process. Before we get to that part, just a little bit of history. So Sandra, a technique was first to use in the 1930 S. And a woman named Margaret Lowen Vo. That was the first person to use Sandra as a technique. 17 00:02:25.250 --> 00:02:35.040 Clare Maguire: It's closely tied to play therapy and child-centered play therapy which is a non-directive approach to therapy so 18 00:02:35.660 --> 00:02:57.070 Clare Maguire: looking at the structure of a school setting where students do a lot of structured work where they're writing and doing all of these really important things, Santra aligns with something more non directive where students have the opportunity to explore their inner world or clients in a therapeutic setting. 19 00:02:57.340 --> 00:03:13.110 Clare Maguire: Virginia axline is credited with creating child center play therapy. and that the goal, when you're working in Santray is to understand the client's inner world through their creative expression. 20 00:03:13.510 --> 00:03:26.510 Clare Maguire: So you're letting the client access parts of themselves, they can sometimes be seen as the unconscious and then processing what they develop. 21 00:03:26.630 --> 00:03:44.570 Clare Maguire: This can be really helpful with working with children where a traditional form of talk. Therapy might not be the most beneficial to align with them, because kids and students thinking about across the developmental spectrum they like to play. 22 00:03:44.570 --> 00:03:57.600 Clare Maguire: or we've been with teenagers. It can be hard if you're, you know, sitting face to base, saying, okay, tell me about what's going on for you. So it's another dynamic form of communication that can be used. 23 00:04:00.170 --> 00:04:06.330 Clare Maguire: I mentioned earlier that it has roots in youngian and humanistic approaches to therapy. 24 00:04:06.420 --> 00:04:12.930 Clare Maguire: but it can be applied with all different theoretical and clinical orientations. 25 00:04:13.060 --> 00:04:22.350 Clare Maguire: There are a few listed on my poster. so, moving on from the theory and history of Santray. 26 00:04:23.000 --> 00:04:27.270 Clare Maguire: we come to the part about. How do you do it? What do you do? 27 00:04:31.010 --> 00:04:35.520 Clare Maguire: The soundtray process can look a lot of different ways 28 00:04:35.550 --> 00:04:38.130 as you'll see on the poster. 29 00:04:38.810 --> 00:04:48.750 Clare Maguire: There are some examples of a Santray in what's most likely a clinical setting, with a large wooden box. 30 00:04:49.180 --> 00:04:56.340 Clare Maguire: with many different types of figurines and structures and symbols placed inside that box. 31 00:04:56.640 --> 00:05:14.580 Clare Maguire: Now, thinking about cantree being used in other areas, such as a school setting it's not needed to have something as set up as the the photos on the poster with the wood in box. You could even use a 32 00:05:14.680 --> 00:05:21.780 Clare Maguire: plastic tub with kinetic sand or something that's portable, but it's creating the space 33 00:05:22.140 --> 00:05:32.700 Clare Maguire: for the client or student just to be able to explore their inner world. The sand itself is inherently call me to have that tactile 34 00:05:32.750 --> 00:05:34.710 Clare Maguire: somatic approach. 35 00:05:36.980 --> 00:05:54.800 Clare Maguire: So whether you're using something that's more foundational and set up, or something that's more portable and easy to use in different settings, you will have a box of some sort to hold the sand, and on the bottom of the box 36 00:05:55.130 --> 00:06:07.080 Clare Maguire: it is typically, if you're using a wooden traditional sand tray box, painted blue, which also represents the ocean and the unconscious in our minds. 37 00:06:07.500 --> 00:06:09.940 Clare Maguire: S0 0nce you have your box. 38 00:06:10.040 --> 00:06:19.170 you'll notice in the photographs there's a number of figurines and different symbols, and those are oftentimes based with 39 00:06:19.220 --> 00:06:31.910 Clare Maguire: themes. So you would have, maybe. all of your nature items together, items that are associated with different parts of life, maybe grief and death. 40 00:06:33.090 --> 00:06:43.780 Clare Maguire: Animals would be together different types of people. And in this non-directive approach you can use some. Santry prompts questions to ask. 41 00:06:43.850 --> 00:06:54.420 and the client or student would then create a scene in the sand which describes what's happening in their inner world through this experiential modality. 42 00:07:02.160 --> 00:07:05.270 Clare Maguire: while a client or student 43 00:07:05.390 --> 00:07:09.500 Clare Maguire: is creating their scene in the sand. 44 00:07:10.050 --> 00:07:23.830 Clare Maguire: The role of the counselor is to be no directive, so you wouldn't say something like oh, your trees here! Would you like to move it over here instead? You're letting them experience their process. 45 00:07:25.040 --> 00:07:31.550 Clare Maguire: All of the items that students choose can have significance. 46 00:07:31.640 --> 00:07:39.590 Clare Maguire: so they can be associated with youngian or archetypes from that theory of counseling and psychotherapy. 47 00:07:40.600 --> 00:07:42.980 Clare Maguire: And you can look at different 48 00:07:43.030 --> 00:07:49.510 Clare Maguire: items that clients place in the sand, and how they place them are very important 49 00:07:49.750 --> 00:08:02.150 Clare Maguire: bridges. As an example, If there's a bridge that's important if they place all of their items in one corner of the Santray Say, there's a person that's separate in the sand trade from the others. 50 00:08:02.290 --> 00:08:10.260 Clare Maguire: All of these ways that the Santa Cruz set up can give you some insight into what the client is experiencing. 51 00:08:12.540 --> 00:08:23.260 Clare Maguire: Once the client has developed their tray, you can interpret the tray. Some counselors will take photographs to look at the tray later. 52 00:08:23.390 --> 00:08:26.470 Clare Maguire: One important piece is that 53 00:08:26.960 --> 00:08:36.320 Clare Maguire: when the student or client is finished they're not expected to take apart their sand trade. That would be like taking up their inner world. 54 00:08:36.380 --> 00:08:42.740 Clare Maguire: So it's the role of the counselor to dismantle the Santa Cruz, once the client or student, has left. 55 00:08:43.450 --> 00:08:47.640 Clare Maguire: Now we can look at using Santra in various 56 00:08:47.730 --> 00:09:00.480 Clare Maguire: ways and capacities depending on the setting. So, in a clinical setting there might be more emphasis placed on the interpretation. Looking at the interpretation over time 57 00:09:01.090 --> 00:09:13.050 Clare Maguire: in setting such a schools sanitre can be a wonderful modality to use with students without necessarily needing to dive as deep into 58 00:09:13.220 --> 00:09:15.380 Clare Maguire: the interpretation 59 00:09:17.720 --> 00:09:29.110 Clare Maguire: Santra is showing up in many different books on best practices, using creativity and mental health. 60 00:09:29.170 --> 00:09:36.620 Clare Maguire: You can see down below, on the resources, the Handbook of Clay therapy is a place where Santry work is included. 61 00:09:37.860 --> 00:09:45.740 Clare Maguire: Santry Couldn't can be viewed as very important in our time, when so much of our focus 62 00:09:45.760 --> 00:09:51.190 Clare Maguire: is not on the experiential, and can be very much 63 00:09:51.950 --> 00:09:55.730 Clare Maguire: outcome related rather than process related. 64 00:09:56.800 --> 00:10:03.720 Clare Maguire: Allowing space for some of these more creative ways of approaching. 65 00:10:03.780 --> 00:10:09.500 Clare Maguire: working with students in a school setting can be so beneficial. At this time. 66 00:10:09.860 --> 00:10:16.720 Clare Maguire: Santra is used for trauma and other various issues that may come up 67 00:10:17.240 --> 00:10:25.320 Clare Maguire: students right now in a school setting are just coming out of experiencing the pandemic, the COVID-19 pandemic 68 00:10:25.840 --> 00:10:32.390 Clare Maguire: and other ways that they can utilize, using a creative process 69 00:10:32.650 --> 00:10:36.080 Clare Maguire: within the more structured school setting. 70 00:10:40.920 --> 00:10:47.190 Clare Maguire: Thank you for taking the time to listen to my short vide0 0n using 71 00:10:47.270 --> 00:10:58.740 Clare Maguire: Santray technique as a counseling technique in clinical and most importantly school settings. and I look forward to showing my poster in person. 72 00:10:58.910 --> 00:10:59.810 Clare Maguire: Thank you.
