L.A. Pickard discusses his experiences as a smokejumper in Montana, which started in 1948 and ended in 1950. He comments on the social life, the experimental firefighting equipment used, and the 1949 Mann Gulch Fire. He also discusses Forest Service policy from his point of view as an environmentalist.
