The 2026 Hon. James R. Browning Distinguished Lecture in Law was delivered by the Honorable Judge Danielle Forrest of the United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit. Judge Forrest has continued Judge Browning’s tradition of service and dedication to the legal community. She practiced commercial litigation in Portland and has taught advanced civil procedure and litigation skills as an adjunct professor at Lewis & Clark Law School. She served as a law clerk for Judge Paul J. Kelly, Jr. of the Tenth Circuit, Judge Michael W. Mosman of the United States District Court for the District of Oregon, and Judge Diarmuid F. O’Scannlain of the Ninth Circuit. Judge Forrest's lecture focused on the inherent limitations of the judicial role and a judge's duty to uphold the separation of powers by adhering to that role. We were truly fortunate to have her share her insight and wisdom on the judicial role in a period of increasing polarization.
