Description

Mike Mansfield describes his relationship with John F. Kennedy and Lyndon B. Johnson, especially regarding the Vietnam War. He talks about his childhood, running away from home before finishing eighth grade and joining up with the Oregon National Guard. He recalls his military service, when he lied about his age and enlisted in the U.S. Navy at the age of 14. When he was discharged in 1922, he got a job as a mucker in a copper mine in Butte. He describes meeting his wife, Maureen, who convinced him to finish his education and get a degree from the University of Montana. He ends by describing his early years in the U.S. Senate and in Congress.
