Description
In this interview, Roger Dunsmore reflects on his relationship with Henry Bugbee. He discusses first meeting Bugbee at Penn State University as a graduate student taking Bugbee’s philosophy courses. Although Dunsmore talks about being turned off by religion, he was intrigued by Bugbee’s courses in religious philosophy, oriental thought, and modern religious thought. After earning his master’s, Dunsmore came to the University of Montana to teach in the Philosophy Department alongside Bugbee. Dunsmore discusses becoming intrigued with American Indians and later teaching American Indian literature. Bugbee’s book titled, The Inward Morning, is a major theme in the interview, and Dunsmore talks about how his own interests in writing poetry and writing about the wilderness did not happen until after he met Bugbee. Dunsmore says, however, that he never shared Bugbee’s love of fly-fishing. And finally, Dunsmore reads a poem, “Mountain Ash,” he wrote about Bugbee after he died.
