Description
Dr. Burns’ manuscript chronicles how the University of Montana’s Department of Elocution and Physical Culture (1897), one of the university’s oldest programs, evolved to become the Department of Physical Education and later the Department of Health and Human Performance, a program that initially organized “gymnasium practice” and later trained physical education teachers and coaches. The program eventually became one of the most popular campus venues for candidates interested in pre-medicine, physical therapy, nursing, physician assistant certification, and other post-baccalaureate health-care training programs. The manuscript also covers associated history of the university, including changing administrative styles and philosophies, legislative and public support, political exigencies, generational differences, significant campus events, and cultural nuances.
