For many tribes, the natural resources occupying the land and waters encompassing their traditional territories contain deeply rooted principles grounded in culture, tradition, and law.¹ Tribes continue to utilize the natural resources of their territories for religious, ceremonial, medicinal, subsistence, and economic needs.² This article will discuss various aspects pertaining to tribal natural resources, including Indian title, Indian rights, the implementation of rights associated with traditional territories as well as on-reservation rights, and cultural resource sustainability.
