Clay Lewis discusses moving to Montana during the Great Depression in order to mine for gold with a dredge line company. He describes his early mining experiences near Nine Mile, Montana, the equipment he used, and how the Depression affected the people in and around Nine Mile. Lewis also details how World War Two affected the Montana mining industry, mining operations that he worked on, and his experiences with the ‘mining culture.’ He describes many families and mining operations associated with abandoned cabins in the Nine Mile area and explains how gold varies from gulch to gulch before playing guitar and singing two songs.
