Scott McGowan discusses his life growing up on a ranch near Poplar, Montana. He talks about the importance of sports in his family and community from a young age including his participation in basketball and transition into track and field. McGowan reflects on his high school track career and the difficult transition from Class B to Division I college athletics at UM. He discusses the challenges of coming from a rural place to a big college campus and town as well as injuries and illness that impacted his college track career. McGowan talks about the support from UM’s coaches, his successes as a college athlete, and what UM athletics means to him. Sam Tyrrel was an undergraduate student participating in the Griz Nation Oral History Project as part of the Griz130 History Initiative.
