During the 1950s, Native American students at the University of Montana (UM) formed a Native American club. By the late 1960s, the Kyiyo Native American Student Association was recognized as an official UM club. The word Kyiyo is Blackfoot for bear, which corresponds with the UM’s symbol of the grizzly bear. Since the 1968-1969 school year, Kyiyo has hosted an annual powwow and youth conference to celebrate Native American culture and traditions.
This collection consists of published materials produced by the Kyiyo Native American Student Association, including newsletters and annual youth conference program guides. To learn more about the history of Kyiyo, view the guide to the Kyiyo Native American Student Association history collection, or visit the Mansfield Library’s Archives and Special Collections for historic photos.
