Description
Don Oberdorfer begins the interview by describing his recent travels to China and to different archives and libraries to search for more sources for his book on Mike Mansfield. Mansfield discusses President Jimmy Carter’s policy against the proliferation and reprocessing of nuclear materials and the negotiations he went through to keep some Japanese plutonium plants open. He talks about his relationship with President Lyndon B. Johnson during the Vietnam War, and the way he continued to advocate bringing an end to the war. He also recalls South Korea’s involvement in the war. Mansfield talks about his wife, Maureen Hayes Mansfield’s, involvement in his early campaigns in Montana, which included memorizing people’s names in the phone book and giving speeches on his behalf. He briefly mentions a meeting he had with Director J. Edgar Hoover of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI). Mansfield concludes by describing the two times he ran away from home as a young teen.
