Description
Mike Mansfield discusses the relations between Japan, China, South Korea, and North Korea. He talks with Don Oberdorfer about Oberdorfer’s upcoming trip to China and South Korea. Mansfield describes the recent political developments between North Korea and the U.S., including the possibility that the U.S. government might lift its economic sanctions against North Korea. Mansfield talks about his wife, Maureen Hayes Mansfield’s, recent passing and how pleased he was with the obituaries in the Missoulian and the Los Angeles Times. Oberdorfer shows some photos of meetings Mansfield had with President Lyndon B. Johnson. The two discuss Johnson’s habit of using secret microphones to record conversations. Mansfield recalls voting on the Tonkin Gulf resolution and how he considers it one of his biggest political mistakes. Joseph Stanley “Stan” Kimmitt arrives during the interview, and the three discuss Maureen’s funeral and the memorial event in Montana.
