Mike Mansfield talks about attending the swearing in for Howard Baker at the White House and seeing Katharine Graham, the former publisher for the Washington Post. He and Don Oberdorfer briefly discuss Oberdorfer’s experience as a journalist at the Washington Post. Mansfield discusses his wife, Maureen Hayes Mansfield’s, education and life before he met her. He explains how he became an Assistant Whip in the U.S. House and, later, Majority Whip in the U.S. Senate. Mansfield recalls former Prime Minister of Vietnam Ngo Dinh Diem and how he argued against General J. Lawton Collins to keep Diem in office during the 1950s. Mansfield talks about his 1977 trip to Vietnam to assess the prisoner of war (POW) situation. He also offers his opinion of Japanese Prime Minister Koizumi and how expects Koizumi to govern.
The transcript for oral history interview OH 391-022 includes Don Oberdorfer’s notes on the interview. It also includes Oberdorfer’s summary of a September 9, 2001 meeting with Mansfield at Walter Reed Hospital and their final meeting on September 25, 2001, ten days before Mansfield’s death.
