Description

Political cartoon and letter by James Stevenson printed in the Los Angeles Times The cartoon depicts two people walking through the senate saying, "It's still the same size, I guess, But... It certainly seems a lot smaller... With Mike Mansfield Leaving..." With the second character saying, "I know what you mean..." There is a note to Mike Mansfield in the lower right corner from the artist that reads, "To Mike Mansfield with admiration and gratitude- Jim Stevenson 1976"

The Letter reads,

"June 6, 1976

Dear Senator Mansfield,

Your kind letter of May 1st regarding my comic strip arrived here yesterday (due to the mysterious workings of the L.A. Times Syndicate, if not the Postal Service) and that accounts for the extreme delay in my response. I'm delighted that you liked the cartoon, and it is with enormous pleasure that I send it to you herewith. It was intended as a tribute to you in the first place-- although certainly a minuscule tribute in the light of your long and generous devotion to this country.

With all best wishes,

Sincerely, James Stevenson."
