Description

Framed oil painting of a gate leading into the U.S. Embassy residence in Tokyo, Japan. The painting is primarily completed in blues and greens.

This painting was gifted to Maureen and Mike Mansfield by the artist, Joe Ohashi in 1979. In a letter to Maureen and Mike Mansfield from Jane Rees, Jane states:

"He [Joe Ohashi] loves Washington D.C., and one night he was passing by your residence in (1970), and he said Reinanzaka reminded him of an area in Washington around Franklin Square and 16th Street. He said he could almost [hear] Al Jolson singing "Swanee", and Louis Armstrong playing the blues!

So he painted your back gate [of the residence], and dreamed of the good old days as a young painter in our capital. I just love this old man, and this morning he wanted to give my Ambassador this painting."
