The Jefferson Award was founded in 1972 by the American Institute for Public Service which was then run by Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, Senator Robert Taft Jr. and Sam Beard. The Jefferson Award in the country's longest standing celebration of public service. Each year 8 awards are presented: U.S. Senator John Heinz Award for Outstanding Public Service by an Elected Official; S. Roger Horchow Award for Outstanding Public Service by a Private Citizen; Outstanding Public Service Benefiting the Disadvantaged; Samuel S. Beard Award for Outstanding Public Service by an Individual 35 Years or Under; Outstanding Public Service in Professional Sports; Lifetime Achievement in Public Service; Outstanding National or Global Service by a Young American 25 Years or Under; and Outstanding Public Service by a Corporation.
The American Institute for Public Service commissioned Peter Max to create a painting to be presented with the award which was then turned into a limited edition run of 300 prints. The prints are only available through the Jefferson Award.
