Abstract

Let F be a field and let M_n(F) be the full ring of n by n matrices over F. Let S be a finite set of matrices generating M_n(F) as an algebra. In this talk, we look at how quickly such a set S generates M_n(F). By this we mean, how many multiplications (among elements of S) are required to pick up a basis for the algebra?
