Mining the Internet for Metadata
The Montana History Portal (MHP), formerly known as the Montana Memory Project (MMP), is an effort of the Montana State Library to digitally capture “historic and contemporary resources reflecting Montana’s rich cultural heritage”. Images of photographs in the MHP collection may have incomplete or incorrect metadata. Dates of photographs may be missing. Information on the subject of the photograph, such as location, people in the scene, machinery in the scene, and so forth, may be incomplete or missing. The source of these issues is generally in the physical collection from which the photograph is drawn. In an attempt to complete the metadata fields for the 7000+ photographs scanned to date at the University of Montana Maureen and Mike Mansfield Library and added to the MHP collection, library staff and volunteers research individual images selected more or less at random as a quality control effort.
This collection contains results of some of that research. Research accounts in this collection relate only to those images with the Local Identifier metadata field in the form of umt######, where ###### is a serial number. This collection is not intended to be the final and complete word on the respective photographs. Information in the accounts in this collection is drawn almost exclusively from internet resources, including content in the MHP collection itself.
If you care to comment on the content in this collection, please email the author. If you care to comment on some other photo in the MHP collection, please follow the instructions on the respective MHP page.
