Description
Ernie Franceschi, Gayl Tiechert, and Joke van Zee discuss working with the organization BikeCentennial in setting up bicycle trips and arranging overnight accommodations for the bicyclers. This work led to the establishment of the Birchwood Hostel in Missoula, Montana in 1977 which was modeled after European youth hostels. They recounted the operation of the hostel and told stories about some of the hostelers and how they would introduce them to the wonders of Missoula, MT. They also spoke about the change in the types of hostelers they served—from bicyclers to school groups, couples and families, and airline crew. The Birchwood Hostel closed down in 2000. Franceschi and Tiechert conclude with their post-hostel work adding information about services available to bicyclers on bicycle maps for Adventure Cycling (had been BikeCentennial).
