Kristina Fallan describes growing up on the coast of Norway, where she helped run the family farm before she immigrated to Montana in 1910 when she was only 16. She reminisces about sailing to America by herself, working on her sister’s ranch, going back to school to learn English, and filing for a homestead after becoming an American citizen. Fallan talks about life on the homestead and cooking for sheep shearers in Livingston, Montana, to earn extra money. She compares the male-dominated sheep shearing industry in the United States and, particularly, Montana, to the mostly female-dominated industry in Norway. She briefly describes meeting her husband and the complications she had birthing her two children. Fallan concludes by noting she wanted to better prepare her daughter for marriage and sex than her mother did with her.
