Description
Francis “Frank” Valeo describes his time working as Senator Mike Mansfield’s secretary. Valeo recalls Mansfield’s diplomatic approach to China that was shaped from a number of trips to China from the Roosevelt Administration to the Ford Administration. Valeo also talks of Mansfield’s work in Congress from 1961 to 1977, particularly his relation to Congress as Majority Leader and his opposition to the Vietnam War. Valeo describes the writing of Mansfield’s unique eulogy for late President John F. Kennedy and the public’s response to the unexpectedly poetic tribute.
