Description

River Segar (he/they), an M.A. student in Social Work at the University of Montana, reflects on his childhood in Victor, Montana, where he fondly remembers exploring the forests with his twin sister and growing up in a place he experienced as happy and familiar. He discusses how, after moving to Missoula at age eighteen, he came to recognize aspects of the small-town environment he had not fully understood as a child, including conservative political culture and pervasive racism. Segar also shares his academic and professional aspirations and offers an overview of the history of the Leather Community, including its frequent conflation with the Kink community and the areas where the two overlap. He reflects on the relationships, sense of connection, and personal growth he has experienced since becoming involved in Missoula’s Leather Community. Segar was interviewed by History M.A. student Indy Ashton Hite.
