Andrew Stevenson describes his one regular season in 1965 as a smokejumper and his nine years as a retread, or a regular U.S. Forest Service employee who can be called up to jump as needed, from 1966 to 1974. In particular, he talks about training at the Redding, California base, working with ground crews on fires, and the Forest Service’s emphasis on smokejumper safety.
