Abstract
Black-billed Cuckoos (BBCU) are believed to be experiencing population declines and are recognized as a Species of Concern by Montana Fish Wildlife and Parks (FWP). Further, FWP has designated BBCUs as a species of research priority. However, the study of BBCU presents challenges since they are hard to detect through traditional avian research methods. Their reluctance to fly, move, or vocalize in the presence of humans hinders surveying and research, thereby complicating the development of evidence-based management strategies. A potential solution to this challenge is using Autonomous Recording Units (ARUs) - small, affordable, and programmable audio recording devices proven useful in other wildlife studies.
