Description
Roberta Stroden describes her garden in the Swan Valley. She talks about how she became interested in gardening and her gardening philosophy of growing only what can handle the climate. Stroden talks about the different plants—vegetables and flowers—that grow well in her part of the valley, and how she’s transitioned from purchasing seeds every year, to collecting her own seeds or letting plants reseed themselves. She discusses the act of gardening as spiritual and notes that she never spends so much time in the garden that it feels like a chore. She mentions completing a master gardener’s course at the Missoula County Extension Office, and how she advocates for gardening and learning more about the land and microclimates in the valley.
