Description

Scott Cohen describes growing up in New York City and what prompted him to join the U.S. Navy in 1999. He discusses basic training at Great Lakes, Michigan, noting that it was the easiest part of his military career. Cohen talks about his military occupational specialty as a journalist and getting assigned to an American Forces Network station near Tokyo. He recalls the transition to combat camera command which included Survival, Evasion, Resistance, Escape [SERE] training and Desert Survival Training. Cohen describes the duties and expectations of serving in a public affairs command and what his deployment in Afghanistan was like. He also talks about meeting Afghan heads of state and cabinet members, including Hamid Karzai, during his time in the Navy.
