In this interview, David Francavilla discusses how his father, “Grandpa Tony,” served in World War II and Korea, and growing up and moving with his family to his father’s assignments. He mentions that his brother was killed while serving in the U.S. Marine Corps in Vietnam. Francavilla talks about attending college in Northern Colorado and earning his master’s degree from the War College and the University of Phoenix. Francavilla discusses enlisting in the U.S. Army after college, where he spent 32 years of service. He discusses attending basic training at Fort Dix, New Jersey; Advanced Individual Training at Fort Benning, Georgia; and Officer Candidate School at Fort Benning. Francavilla briefly discusses being deployed to Desert Storm / Desert Shield. Francavilla then examines in depth his decision to work for the Department of Veterans’ Affairs after his military service, exploring the services the VA offers to veterans, as well as those provided by other groups.
