Abstract
When Austin Hagwood first visited a rundown fire lookout on a mountain peak, he had no idea he would one day join the ranks of the few fire-watchers left in North America. A fateful phone call led him to southwest Montana, where he spent five summers living alone in a lookout 8,000 feet above sea level. This thesis is the story of those five seasons, months that led to love, knowledge of a place, and what we seek from wilderness itself.
