This literary magazine, initially titled The Montanan, was known as The Frontier beginning with the second issue in 1920 and then as The Frontier and Midland starting with volume 14, issue 1 in 1933. Founded and edited by Professor Harold G. Merriam, English professor at the University of Montana, this literary magazine is recognized as the first regularly published literary anthology for Montana and the Northern Rocky Mountain region. The series includes numerous sequences of correspondence between Merriam and many of the most influential figures in Montana and Western literature.
