Description
Zach Dundas discusses writing for the Hellgate High School student newspaper, The Lance, and the counterculture, alternative newspaper, the Missoula Independent. He describes his interest in the punk, new wave and underground music scene in Missoula, Montana during 1990s, and how many of his articles focused on that topic. Dundas talks about getting hired to work at the Missoula Independent, which he describes as more like a zine at that time than an actual newspaper. He recalls that the Independent writers were allowed to focus on topics of interest to them, rather than being assigned specific topics. Dundas discusses the zine Mumblage with his friend Dan Engler. He notes the influence of punk and subculture music scene on zines and the DIY nature of small press publications. Dundas talks about how zine culture began to ebb with the evolution of the internet. He also mentions the role of the internet on the music scene, noting that bands can put their music online to gain recognition rather than having to play numerous shows with little or no audience.
