Charles Martin Demery discusses his past experience as a young, cisgender man within the Leather Community living in San Francisco, California, during the AIDS epidemic in the 1980s. Demery reflects on the Leather Community’s role in queer history, and how embodying the core values of the Leather Community (brotherhood, inclusivity, philanthropy, service, mentorship, and education) have helped shape his ambitions, relationships, and participation in Missoula, Montana’s queer community; especially his connection with Montana’s transgender community, during the second Trump administration. The interviewer, River Segar, is earning his Master’s in Social Work at the University of Montana and is a transgender man.
