Description
Howard Reinhardt discusses his educational background and his tenure at the University of Montana as a professor in the Department of Mathematics (1957-1983) and, later, as Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences (1983-1987). He describes the collegiality among professors across campus, the changing nature of student goals, and the role of a liberal arts education in society. Reinhardt talks about his relationship with professors in the department, as well as his relationships with other University personnel. He recalls the role of the department’s chairman and issues that they dealt with. Reinhardt discusses the increasing trend of departments acquiring Ph.D. programs, his motivation for pursuing the Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences position, and his experience working with several University of Montana administrations.
