Description
Stephen Adams and Townsend Lathrop discuss their involvement and contribution to the restructure of the Boone and Crockett Club during the late 1980s. Adams and Lathrop recall joining the club in 1985 and describe its organizational structure and culture at that time. They explain that when they joined, the club lacked organization and struggled to obtain and manage funds for projects. Adams and Lathrop discuss their concern that the club’s conservation mission and historical legacy as an activist organization was no longer prioritized and that the club had essentially become a men’s dinner club. They discuss their work to revitalize the club by reorganizing its bylaw structure. Adams and Lathrop talk about their efforts to rewrite the club’s mission statement, change the member admission and acceptance policies, and fundraising efforts. They describe the difficulty they had gaining consensus for these changes, specifically the admission of women members to the club. Despite the “growing pains,” Adams and Lathrop conclude that these efforts revitalized the club’s mission and legacy, as well as member participation and interest.
