In this brief interview, Bill Gerlech shares that he was born in Kenosha, Wisconsin. He recalls enlisting in the Air Force on the day President John F. Kennedy was assassinated. Gerlech attended basic training in San Antonio, Texas, and he reflects on serving in the Air Force during the Vietnam War from 1963 to 1967. He states that he specialized in electronics and helicopter maintenance, and he was awarded a Vietnam Service Medal. Gerlech’s younger brother also enlisted in the Air Force and served in Vietnam. He also mentions that he is married and met his wife while both were serving in the Air Force.
