Abstract
Three ways of knowing; associative knowing, compositional knowing and contextual knowing are theoretically explored and illustrated. The main implication for mathematics education is that communication needs to focus on students’ authorship. Classrooms in India and Sweden are compared and analyzed for these three ways of knowing.
